Book Excerpt

Nate and Alissia enter Heaven

First, I had to bring Alissia into Heaven. We stood up before dawn and walked to the minster. The huge building was impressive, no matter how often I visited it. The over two hundred feet high limestone church lay in darkness when we approached. We circulated to the eastern side, with the enormous stained-glass window. Taking Alissia into my arms, I flew onto the roof over the York Minster’s Great East window, called ‘Apocalypse’. How fitting. Concealed by the pinnacles, we sat on the roof and waited. We held each other close and relished our moment together. Anything could happen when we’d enter the other realm.

As the first ray of sun broke through the clouds, I embraced Alissia and soared upwards into its overwhelming light. The beam grew brighter as we flew higher, our bodies becoming weightless with each passing cloud. We crossed the clouds with a silent elegance, eventually arriving in Heaven. The surrounding air was tranquil and divine. It was peaceful here. All around us were soft woolly clouds except before us, where an enormous golden gate towered above the floor with its wondrously embellished wings, the design inspired by its divine purpose. I knew this would be our entrance into Heaven.

Taking Alissia’s hand, we walked towards the gate. I could hear Alissia’s shallow, nervous breathing and squeezed her hand. We nodded to each other for reassurance. Whatever would happen next, we would face it together.

The gate opened a split, and we stepped into another realm. Behind us, the pass closed without a sound. In front of us, a long runway was visible, made from white marble, and intertwined with golden linings. The runway was ten yards wide, and there was vast white nothingness next to it. Looking at Alissia, I noticed her clothes had changed. Instead of jeans and her jacket, she wore a slender white dress with golden ornaments. It looked beautiful on her. When I glanced down at myself, I saw I wore a similar long white tunic with gold embellishments stitched on it. I grimaced. I preferred my dark jeans and the black T-shirt I had worn previously.

We walked several minutes along the straightway until, eventually, a city ascended before us. The buildings were made from white marble, too. The delicate roofs were built up of gold. Next to the housings, water fell from cliffs in immense cascades into the white nothingness. Between the buildings, shapes with white wings floated around. We made our way to the city.

At last, one shape drifted towards us. As it came nearer, it took on the outline of a man. His skin was dark, and his long black hair hovered around him. He wore a tunic similar to mine. His wings seemed to be diaphanous and not made of feathers but of white threads of light. A white halo surrounded him.

“Nephilim, what is your request?” The angel’s voice was deep and voluminous. “You are not allowed here.”
