There's something magical about Yarrow, Kentucky. The three empathic witches of the Haywood family are known for their shadow garden—from strawberries that taste like chocolate to cherry tomatoes with hints of basil and oregano. Their magic can cure any heartache, and the fruits of their garden bring a special quality to the local bourbon distillery. On one day every year, a shot of Bonner bourbon will make your worst memory disappear.

But twenty years ago, the town gave up more than one memory for the year; they forgot an entire summer. One person died. One person disappeared. And no one has any idea why.

As secrets from that fateful summer start to come to light, there must be a reckoning between the rival Haywood and Bonner families. But the only clue Irene Haywood has is in her tea leaves: a stranger’s arrival will bring either love or betrayal…

My Review

In the Shadow Garden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars ☆☆☆☆

Wow, the last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat.

In the Shadow Garden, is about three generations of Haywood witches (Addison, Irene and Mara) and their journey to discover why their magic and the garden seem to be off. Their town depends on their garden to cure different ailments and on the local bourbon distillery, where one day a year the town drinks away a bad memory.

As the yearly festival approaches, one of the owners of the distillery dies. The eldest son returns to be with his family but he's reluctant about it. He didn't have the best relationship with his father and his mother did nothing to stop his father's abuse.

When he arrives in Yarrow the first place he stops is the tea shop run by Irene and her best friend. He's surprised that Irene doesn't instantly remember him but he stirs a memory/feeling that draws her to him.

Addison is dealing with a tea reading that leaves her distressed about the shadow garden and her ex-boyfriend is in town and he despised her. She tried to take away the pain he felt after the death of his grandfather and instead stripped him of all the feelings surrounding his grandfather. When she encourages her grandmother to supply the Bonner family with rosemary for the memorial, things seem to go array.

They also discover that twenty years ago the whole town seems to have given up more than one memory and seemed to have forgotten the entire summer.

The Haywoods and Bonners will finally confront each other as the past is finally revealed and everyone involved realizes just how far the Bonners betrayal goes. Ultimately it will take a different kind of magic to set things right.

Thank you so much to the author and Hachette Audio for this audio to review.
