Excerpt
“Please, continue,” Jack says smoothly. “I own the place. Jack Sharpe.” He holds out his hand, but the nervous-looking man doesn’t shake it, gaze dancing between us. “This is my fiancée. I am showing her my pride and joy. How has your experience been in here so far?”
The man swallows wetly. “We’re having a great time,” he says low, looking embarrassed about that fact. “Bucket list item. Y’know?”
A few other guys wander in behind him, all as unassuming and forgettable as each other. They could be neighbors, friends, husbands, and fathers. They have mild smiles, neat hair, clean clothes. But each is holding a weapon or tool in one hand, testing its weight, chewing on their lips, and planning out their next assault.
Jack, maybe reading the apprehension and confusion from me, jerks his chin in the direction of the man bound and gagged in the corner. “Don’t feel sorry for him, darling. He is a gangbanger. He has raped and murdered. He went too far for even his fellow criminals. They don’t want to be associated with him anymore, so they sent him to me. It’s a deal we have.” He looks sideways at me and lowers his voice as the middle-aged men circle the chair, considering their next move. “If they want someone to disappear, for whatever reason, they send them to me. And tourists looking for the ultimate thrill, they pay me and do all the dirty work.”
If it wasn’t so sick and twisted, I’d have to hand it to him that it is kind of smart. Now I guess I know where all his money comes from.
I know where the blood on his shoes and cuffs comes from.
Finally, I know. I think now I know everything. I can make an informed decision with all the information at hand.
Stay under Jack’s protection, or run run run away. Straight into the jaws of a different serial killer.
