Thirty-five-year-old Abigail’s midlife crisis first appeared as an innocent trade in of her Ford Taurus for a two-seater BMW. Then she resigned as lead prosecutor and took a job at Patty Cakes Bakery heating cinnamon buns. But no one was more shocked at her behavior than her fiancĂ©, Joe Batista, when she gave back his engagement ring without a reason why.

They say your past always catches up to you and one day Abigail’s past showed up on her porch wearing Converse shoes and holding an old picture of her and her high school sweetheart, Ryan Jameson. Tessa Snow had traveled from Florida to Maine to meet her biological mother and the next stop was Boone, Texas to meet her dad, the guy in the picture.

Ryan Jameson, as fate would have it, just returned home and was settling in as the most eligible doctor at Mercer Hospital. He hadn’t seen Abigail in 18 years, when she disappeared with her parents without as much as a text message saying goodbye.

It was a good thing Abigail got fired on day three of her bakery job, because she had to make it to Texas before Tessa, in order to tell Ryan the reason she left was because she was pregnant. But when she got there, it was harder than she thought; their chemistry together had grown stronger. And nothing would kill it faster than the truth about Tessa Snow.

About the Author

Julieann Dove takes great pleasure in writing about love and all the mess that goes along with it. How else does happily ever after become realized, if not for some type of hardship and journey? When she’s not writing, she loves playing with fabric at her sewing machine, baking new recipes, and playing in the dirt, trying to get things to grow. Julieann loves old movies, and never tires of listening to music—it’s where she finds most of her inspiration for her books.

He panted, momentarily stopped, and rested against my held-out hands. His half-closed eyes stared at me. "Why? You know I love you, Abby. And you love me, too. I don't know what happened." He backed up. "Tell me what happened. I know you, Abby, and we were fine. We were falling right back to where we left off. It's never been over for me."

"Ryan, you have to leave. I told you I was sorry."

He put his hands on his hips. His breathing was still hard to catch.

I tried to look away. To disappear. Never had I felt so trapped and in possession of the key to the lock that held me bound.

"I'm leaving. I was never going to stay. Joe is waiting for me." It came out almost a whisper in the quietness of the empty house.

He puffed out his chest. His lust turned to anger. "Fine. Just leave. That's what you do, isn't' it? At least this time I got to see you crawl away. That's how you do it, isn't it? Just leave then."

He stormed out and the screen door banged against the frame. I watched as he ran down the steps to his car. I listened to the engine until there was silence. I walked to the door that remained glung open and shut it. My lips still tingled where he kissed them repeatedly seconds ago. I clutched my arms where he held me with tension. Never had I burned from a man like I did Ryan. Never would I look into anyone else's eyes and see that forever wasn't long enough to be with them. And never would I see him again.

My Review

Coming Home
by Julieann Dove
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first time reading anything from this author, the blurb is what drew me in, but I don't feel like that's the book I received. I was expecting more of a romance and what I got was more women's fiction. But all that aside the book was good though Abigail sometimes drove me crazy.

Abigail seems to be going through something. She resigned from her job as a lead prosecutor and took a job at the local bakery heating cinnamon buns. She's even taking a break from her engagement, shocking her fiance Joe.

Now her past is standing on her porch clutching an old prom photo. Tessa Snow came from Florida to Maine to meet her birth mother and plans on traveling to Boone, Texas to meet her dad, the guy in the photo.

Abigail offers to help Tessa sell her mother's house in Texas when she randomly bumps into Ryan Jameson, the town's most eligible doctor. He hasn't seen Abigail since she and her family disappeared overnight without saying goodbye to anyone.

She plans to tell Ryan why she disappeared all those years ago but it's proving harder to do that. Their chemistry is still there but will that change when she tells him about Tessa?

Thanks so much to the author and Caffeinated Reviewer PR for this ARC to review.
