It's 1814 and nineteen-year-old Eliza Melrose, daughter of a printing magnate, is about to be launched into London's high society - much to her distaste, the last thing she wants is a husband.
Eliza's 'misplaced' thirst for adventure, knowledge and the creative word is a bone of contention for her father, who battles endlessly to keep her curiosity and ambitions in check, for women are not meant to ask questions or give opinions in matters of business.
But then she meets the youngest son of the late Duke of Chester, a disgraced nobleman who is shrouded in mystery and proving quite impossible to resist... My Review
One Night with the Duke by Jodi Ellen Malpas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Honestly, I had a hard time with the audio. The performers were great. But I've realized that listening to historicals on audio is not for me.
Their chemistry is intense. Every encounter between the two was angsty and unpredictable. I never knew what to expect. I even feared that they wouldn't end up together because as the chapters flew by things between them weren't settled until the very end.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.
Eliza Melrose is about to make her debut into London society and she is not looking forward to it. She misses living in the country before her father gained the wealth that brought them to London.
Eliza loves learning, yearns to travel, and loved writing for her father's newspaper. Something she is no longer able to do because she is now a lady.
They live in the area of Belmore Square where all the houses look similar. But one house is looking very different. The Winter's residence. It was destroyed in a fire where the whole family died except for one son. Johnny Winter, who is now the Duke of Chester. There are plenty of whispers about him and people tend to steer clear of him.
Eliza becomes fascinated with him, noting that he makes her tingle from head to toe. She finds herself meeting with him in secret as they get to know each other better and even stealing a kiss or two. But she soon finds that she is to be engaged to a man she's not at all interested in and must cut off contact with Johnny.
Thank you so much to the author, and the publisher for this Audio ARC to review.
