Book Excerpt

A sudden flash of silver wrapped around him and then a small, dark-skinned woman with silver hair was hugging the life out of him before stepping back and slapping his chest with both hands.

“Hey there, Hell Cat.” He grinned as Hecate pushed her silver hair back from her face, straightening herself as she took on her powerful persona after her little display of affection. Mercurial eyes stared up at him, tinged with reverence if not disbelief. “I should curse you with a rat tail. Fifty years without a word! I had to spy on you to know for certain you were all right.”

Laughing and earning himself another strike to the chest, he rubbed the spot. She had put some magic behind that last blow.

“I was fine, and I sensed you nearby. Why didn’t you just come say hello?” he asked as he threw his arm around Hecate’s shoulders, forcing her to walk alongside him down the path past the Asphodel Fields where farmers were bringing in their goods from the fields and merchants were trying to collect the final coin of the night.

Soon, the fires would be lit, and people would be dancing and enjoying some revelry before the red moon came up to kiss them goodnight.

“You took off for a reason, and I’m not one to mess with the paths of others,” she retorted, folding her arms across her chest as she walked. She wore her purple gown, meaning she’d been at the crossroads, helping a soul find its path in the afterlife, when she must have felt his power come into the Underworld.

“Says the woman who holds the keys to the crossroads,” he laughed, shaking his head.

Shrugging him off, she turned around to face him. He had missed her, his oldest and dearest friend. The woman who had walked through literal Hell with him.

Who sat with him when the memories tortured him, saying nothing and simply being a calming presence to anchor him when the real world spun out of his grasp and off into the eternal darkness.

“They make their own choices,” she said, her eyes looking him over, as if she’d missed him just as much but would refuse to say so.

Nodding, he waved to the castle.

“Persephone?” he asked, pushing out a feeler for the power of the Underworld goddess, but nothing returned.

“Mortal Realm.” Hecate continued evaluating him in an almost clinical way, and her eyes narrowed as she finished her assessment. “You look less like shit now.”

A smile crossed his face before he could stop it. That was her charm, her endearment, toward him.

“You say the nicest things, Hell Cat.”

“I do. Treasure my words and hold them tight in the darkest part of night. I have to open some doors.” With those words, Hecate’s silver light flooded his sight before she was gone.

Author Bio:

C.D. Britt began her writing journey when her husband told her she needed to use her excessive imagination to write stories as opposed to creating a daily narrative for him. Ever since she penned her first words, life has been a lot more peaceful for him.

She currently resides in Texas where she has yet to adapt to the heat. Her husband thrives in it, so unfortunately, they will not be relocating to colder climates anytime soon.

Their two young children would honestly complain either way.

When she is not in her writing cave (hiding from the sun), she enjoys ignoring the world as much as her children will allow with a good book, music, and vast amounts of coffee (until it’s time for wine).

C.D. Britt is the author of Shadows & Vines, Sirens & Leviathans, and the upcoming book, Storms & Embers.

All three books are part of the Reign of Goddesses series.
